Just take Line 2 or Line 7 to the Jing’an Temple station.Īlthough it can trace its history back to around 247 AD, it hasn’t always been at its current location and hasn’t even always been called Jing’an Temple. Unless you’re within walking distance, the easiest way to get there is probably on the subway. It’s in a prime spot in the centrally located Jing’an district, which was named after the temple rather than the other way round. Jing’an Temple is one of the most famous Buddhist temples in Shanghai. 5 Final thoughts on visiting and photographing Jing’an Temple What and where is Jing’an Temple?.Personal laments aside, read on to learn what and where Jing’an Temple is, see some film shots from there, and get a view on whether it’s worth visiting for yourself if you’re ever in Shanghai. It’s a stock I should have tried much sooner. Shooting this film was another thing I finally got around to, by the way. Now I’ve finally been though I can tell you what to expect and also show you some photographs I got from there on Kodak Portra 400. That’s not because I don’t like temples either, having already written about this other one in Shanghai, this one in Wuxi more than once, and this one in Chongqing too. I was in Shanghai for a good few years but it was only in the closing months that I went to Jing’an Temple. Just think about all the things your hometown has to offer and then think how many of them you’ve done or been to. There’s something about living in a place that makes you get lazy about seeing all of what it has to offer. It was lovely and ornate, and we only wish we'd had more time to explore all its nooks and crannies. The peaks & points of the pagoda roof are covered with gilded elephants, dragons, and lions. We could peer through and see a giant drum in one, and an ornate giant bell in another. We managed to make it around to the front towers, but a couple of them were already closed for the night. ![]() It is hard to know where to look next! The monks are housed in the back area, and they parade into the courtyard to chant prayers. Everywhere there are amazing pieces of woodwork, beautiful stone carvings, bells, textiles, and altars. The temple is an enclosed square at the end of its block, and on each side were rooms with various shrines containing enormous Buddhist statues, benches for kneeling in prayer, and much decoration. Several worshippers came in while we were there, taking a stick of incense, lighting it, and putting it into the burner in prayer for someone or something. In the central courtyard is a towering pagoda, beside a smaller one used for burning incense. There is now an entry fee to the temple, and we only had a half hour to spend looking around, but we made the best of it. Coming out of the underground Metro stop, we looked around-and there it was, a gilded jewel among all the modern high-rise buildings! Though it has been rebuilt, this temple gives the feel of tranquil ancient times in the midst of the bustling city. (Or at least I haven’t yet in my two playthroughs.) Not only does this place the full weight of duty and command on the player and offer an incentive to replay the 12-to-15-hour game multiple times, but it also underlines one of the essential tenets of Star Trek: It is possible for two parties, in good faith and good conscience, to disagree. You cannot please everyone and you cannot save everyone. It’s not simply a matter of passing each one’s individual loyalty check, allowing you to achieve some 100% “perfect” ending. More than anything, it’s your relationships with the supporting cast that shape the variations in the narrative. This instantly makes Resurgence feel closer to the “real” Starfleet experience even than the expansive open world of Star Trek Online, which dictates most of your objectives for you nearly every path ends with “fire all phasers.” Will you risk a dozen lives to save one? Will you disobey a direct order to follow the advice of an impassioned subordinate? Which member of your crew do you trust more in a crisis, and will they trust you in a pinch? These decisions are all made on a short timer, forcing the player to think quickly and trust their instincts. In contrast to the (still far superior) Mass Effect games, which present players with clear-cut Paragon or Renegade paths to pursue, Resurgence’s dialogue trees don’t always offer an obvious ethical binary. Alternating between these A- and B-plots also breaks up the story and the gameplay nicely, and introduces the player to a variety of likable, memorable characters with whom you interact differently depending on your protagonist. There is a two-way relationship between the bridge crew handling the big picture and the specialists below troubleshooting the finer points. Teamwork is an essential ingredient to Star Trek, and Resurgence highlights that it takes a variety of skill sets and perspectives to solve complex problems. Meanwhile, engineer Diaz deals with more of the nuts-and-bolts problems aboard the ship, as well as navigating a romance with a fellow officer.Īs in a good peak-era Star Trek episode, the “problem of the week” is tackled from more than one angle, with some of the crew handling a social or interpersonal conflict while others investigate some related scientific or technological puzzle. Over the course of the story, Rydek takes point on unraveling a mystery with galactic implications, earning the trust of the crew while also evaluating whether or not Solano is worthy of her own. Solano fears that he’s lost the confidence of his staff, and is counting on Academy protege Rydek to help restore his honor as the Resolute embarks on an important diplomatic mission. ![]() The Resolute is recovering from a recent disaster that cost the lives of several of its crew and the reputation of its captain, Zachary Solano. Resurgence alternates between the perspectives of two player-controlled characters aboard the science vessel Resolute, incoming first officer Commander Jara Rydek (Krizia Bajos) and enlisted engineer Petty Officer Carter Diaz (Josh Keaton). But as a Star Trek story, it definitely earns its pips. As a game and as a piece of software, it leaves a lot to be desired. Set aboard a new ship and starring an almost entirely new cast, Resurgence is a branching narrative whose balance between interstellar intrigue, interpersonal conflict, and explosive space action hews closer to that of its source material than any Star Trek game in decades - maybe ever. This seems to be the aim of Star Trek Resurgence, the debut release from Telltale offshoot Dramatic Labs, and the first Star Trek game in ages to be as character- and dialogue-focused as the television series. ![]() To truly capture the essence of the spacefaring adventure series, a video game should be as much about talking as it is about flying and shooting, allowing players to explore new worlds, build relationships, and confront complicated moral dilemmas. Gene Roddenberry’s cosmic polemic often contains action, but it’s never about action Star Trek is about compassion, curiosity, and camaraderie. Moreover, even the most celebrated Star Trek games, such as 2000’s Star Trek: Voyager – Elite Force, 2002’s Star Trek: Bridge Commander, and the long-running MMORPG Star Trek Online, place an overwhelming emphasis on combat, which is only ever a last resort in Star Trek stories. There are licensed Star Trek video games going back 50 years, but there’s never been a truly great Star Trek game, one whose appeal outstretches the limits of its existing fan base. Unlike its esteemed counterpart from Lucasfilm, Star Trek’s history with video games isn’t exactly stellar. ![]() ![]() ![]() Now you can easily create executables for any plugin and run them without any hassle. The garden is divided into nine areas, starting near the house with a slightly English county garden feel and leading to the top where the tropics seem to meet the Mediterranean. Geoff likes to describe his garden as an “ eclectic mix of crap with a few plants thrown in” but he’s way too modest. Pass round the house to the back garden and you enter an intoxicating explosion of colour, structure, and form. It’s got an exotic beach vibe and when Geoff explains that he likes to create a stage scene, it makes perfect sense. There are spikes of Bear’s Breeches, clumps of yellow Curry plants and clusters of vibrant pink Tobacco plants, as well as succulents, Love in the Mist, waves of violet Verbena, grasses, shrubs, succulents and more. There is a rowing boat, fishing nets (used by Geoff’s father back in the day), shingle and sculpture. In due course, he went on to develop the front garden too, enabling him to open Driftwood as an NGS in its own right.Īpproaching Driftwood from the front, you’re greeted with a reflection of the coastline that sits just before it. Meanwhile, Geoff was keen to open his garden as part of the NGS but being a small garden he had to bring together a number of other small gardens to establish a NGS trail in 2011. In 2014, Good Morning Britain chose Driftwood for a live broadcast by Laura Tobin, and by 2016 not only was Geoff’s garden a finalist in Gardeners World’s Garden of the Year competition but it had also featured on the show. I defy you not to gasp as you go through the back gate.īy 2009, Geoff’s garden had had great success in Seaford in Bloom’s competition trail. It’s also sloped, partly shaded and north-facing, but Geoff didn’t let that deter him. Driftwood Garden is 100 ft long and at its narrowest point is only 20 ft wide. This is not the perfect spot for an ambitious gardening project. Having moved to Seaford in 2004 and done everything that needed to be done in the house by 2007, he was bored and so started work on the garden. Geoff is the first to admit that he’s not a professional gardener. That is until this week, when blue skies, sunshine and a fair wind blew me back into Seaford once more.
